Medical Stability
Patients must be medically stable enough to engage in physical activity with clearance from a physician. Medical contraindications include unstable fractures or cardiovascular status, active deep venous thrombosis, recent fracture (not yet corrected), non-weight bearing status, and acute coronary syndrome (angina, unstable angina, non-revascularized MI).
Cognitive Ability
Patients should have the cognitive ability to understand and follow instructions related to the use of the Bedside Bike.
Physical Capability
Adequate strength to maintain an upright position while using the device. Some degree of lower extremity control to initiate pedal movement.
Mobility Level
Patients who are restricted to bed for medical indications but were previously mobile, and who can mobilize with assistance are likely to benefit most from the Bedside Bike. However, any patient, including those who are independently mobile, can experience the benefits of in-bed exercise. Patients who are unable to independently lift or mobilize their lower extremities may experience difficulty with this device.
Post-Operative Status
Suitable for patients in the post-acute phase of surgery, provided there are no contraindications for lower limb movement.
Motivation
Demonstrated willingness to participate in rehabilitation activities.
